January – March, 2012

We were thrilled to be contacted by one of our supporters, whose daughter had successfully nominated us at her school for one of their charity events – here’s what she says about it:

“My name is Sonam Shinhmar. When I was five years old my mum was diagnosed with a brain tumour however all I knew was that she was not very well and I didn’t have any knowledge of this illness at the time. I was terrified for my mum and what she was going through, fortunately for us a few years later she had surgery and is making good recovery.

Now I am fourteen years old with a better understanding of brain tumours and also a charity rep at my high school, I decided to choose BTRC to be our schools next chosen charity as I wanted to raise awareness for brain tumours and of all the hard work carried out by the charity into research, since it’s not well recognised in the general public. This event took place in spring term 2012. I held a non-uniform day where each student donated £1, and also raised more money by selling the BTRC wristbands and badges. I also sold more to friends and family. I’m very proud to support this charity and help those who will benefit from research carried out by BTRC.

A total amount of £550.61 was raised.

Thanks to all who donated.

A big thank you Wendy Fulcher for supplying all the merchandise.”

Saturday 28th April – Wednesday 2nd May, 2012

Cycle Ride around East Anglia

Stalwart supporter and trustee Dan Wiggins is organising his annual fundraising cycle ride and writes:

We will be cycling in the region of 50 miles per day, starting in Peterbourgh and bed and breakfasting in Hunstanton, Cromer, Beccles & Ipswich finishing in Cambridge. There are good train links to many of the places on route. (Peterbourgh, Kings Lynn, Ipswich & Cambridge). As per the previous years it is an amateur cycle ride with plenty of stops and refreshments on route. Our much appreciated support crew will carry luggage from the morning to the evening location. Whilst it will be testing it should be fun.

We ask each cyclists to raise or donate a minimum of £50 to BTRC either by setting up their own Just Giving account, by taking sponsorship from any contacts they may have or any other innovative way of raising money (JB 2010!). If you are interested I can provide you with a sponsor form. In 2010 we raised in excess of £60,000 and in 2011 just over £20,000. Details on how this and other money has been spent and the reasons for raising these funds can be found on the BTRC website www.wayahead-btrc.org or my rather outdated and soon to be re-freshed web site www.mindovermiles.org

If you are interested in joining the ride and would like to cycle with us for either one or two days or for the whole event please let me know by either e mail dan.wiggins@btinternet.com or by phone. 01932 244 337 or 07901 971 974. This ride is open to everyone, people who have cycled with us in the past two years and newcomers. Please spread the word to anyone who you think maybe interested.

If you want to support Dan, you can donate on his justgiving page: http://www.justgiving.com/Dan-Wiggins

Race to Midnight

The first of our events being coordinated through Home House’s support is a gruelling endurance event which will culminate in an exclusive party at prestigious Home House. A select group of 20 (crazy!) people will swim across the Solent, cycle to Richmond Park then run to Home House, where they MUST party to midnight in order to qualify! What a challenge!

Please see their website for further information – www.racetomidnight.co.uk or contact Jack Perschke on mail@jackperschke.com (tel 07855470449) or Anna McKay on anna@spinachhealth.co.uk.

Places in the race are sold out but why not go along to Home House on the day to support the participants – and have a great night out for a good cause?

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported us on Friday, 16th March at our recent Amber Ball, held at the Landmark London Hotel. London’s great and good gathered to raise funds for the Brain Tumour Research Campaign – A RECORD £60,000 WAS RAISED for our campaign, to support research into brain tumours at Imperial College’s Charing Cross Hospital. Guest auctioneer JEFFREY ARCHER rallied the audience to bid for some amazing live auction prizes which included the Celebrity Big Brother Chair and a trip-of-a-lifetime to Cambodia, while some “money-can’t-buy” silent auction prizes helped to swell the takings. BTRC was thrilled to raise so much money for much-needed research, thanks to the generosity of the guests and the prize-givers.

A message from Dan Wiggins:

Happy New Year to you all.

There could not be a better way to work off the festive excesses than by joining us in this year’s cycle ride around East Anglia and raising much needed money for the Brain Tumour Research Campaign. We are planning a five day, fundraising ride starting on Saturday 28th April and finishing on Wednesday 2nd May.

At the beginning of March my parents and I will drive the route to gather B&B information and look for suitable stopping points.

Looking forward to hearing who will be joining us this year.

Best wishes,

Dan

December, 2010

The Fairy Princess“CHRISTMAS MAGIC”

One of our supporters who has a passion for music (like so many of us, has been touched by brain tumours, having a young grand-daughter who had surgery to remove a brain tumour at the age of 2) is composing a children’s opera, which he hopes will ultimately be performed as a Gala Presentation by celebrity singers and musicians, but will also serve as an educational tool for children in schools. He has generously pledged to donate a portion of any commercial proceeds from the sale of the finished work to BTRC.

Here is a short excerpt from one of the songs, “The Fairy Princess.”

“Wherever children sing and play,
She’s never very far away,
If a problem you will share,
Just think of her and she’ll be there.

When she’s spread her wings and flown away,
remember well the happy day,
She promised you, she’ll always care
For little children everywhere.
Yes she promised you that she will care
For little children everywhere”.

You can listen to the music by The Fairy Princess
