Over 250 dogs and their owners braved rain and wind last Saturday 13 April to raise £7,000 for the Brain Tumour Research Campaign and the Magic Wand Appeal.

Star of the show was a black Labrador, Tinto, who carried off the coveted accolade of ‘Best in show’ which took place at Dovehouse Green, King’s Road, SW3.

Celebrity judges included broadcaster Johnny Maitland, co-presenter of BBC Radio London’s Barking at the Moon Anna Webb, dog coach Vicki Karn, Cremorne Ward Councillor Gerard Hargreaves, actor Honor Blackman and singer and former X Factor mentor Sinitta, who were on hand to help judge 15 classes which ranged from ‘Cutest puppy’ to ‘My dog has talent’.

Motivated to run in this year’s Virgin London Marathon because a family member is suffering from a brain tumour, Alicia was shocked to discover that brain tumours are the biggest cancer killers of children and adults under forty and have one of the lowest survival rates of all cancers.

She wanted to support her family’s personal links with BTRC and the Mayor of Kensington & Chelsea’s Magic Wand Appeal, helping to raise funds towards a Sono Wand which is a ground-breaking surgical tool that converts pre-operative MRI scans into a virtual reconstruction of the brain, enabling surgeons to operate more accurately.

“For me this run will be a real test of determination, stamina and a personal ambition. It is not only an opportunity for me to push myself physically, I also aim to raise over £5,000 to be shared between BTRC and the Brain Research Trust” says Alicia.

March is Brain Tumour Awareness Month and on the 28th March 2013, BTRC and its fellow Brain Tumour Research member charities are encouraging everyone to wear a hat and make a donation in aid of our annual ‘Wear a Hat Day’.

Bollywood Ball – Dinner, Dancing, Live Entertainment

Every 2 years a group of parents in Notting Hill and Ealing parents organize their Charities Bollywood Ball at The Clay Oven Banqueting Suite in Alperton, which will be held this year on Saturday 27th April.

The ball raises money for nominated good causes at a fun social and local event – this will be their third and this year they have chosen the Brain Tumour Research Campaign alongside Breakthrough Breast Cancer and the Michael Sobell Hospice

The Style Society’s personal stylist, Karen Smyth, with LK Bennett, held a sparkling fashion salon to support Home House’s charity, The Brain Tumour Research Campaign.

A delectable champagne afternoon tea was provided whilst models showcased the must-have pieces from the Spring/Summer 2013 collection!

Afterwards, a 5 minute stroll to LK Bennett’s newest central store in Marylebone High Street was enjoyed with an exclusive 20% discount.

The Magic Wand Easter Fair was a truly colourful and vibrant event, held on 13^thMarch at Kensington Town Hall.  The event raised over £10,000 for the Mayor’s Appeal, bringing us ever closer to the purchase of a Sonowand machine.  There were lots of amazing stalls of fabulous goodies, antique valuations by Dreweatts and two exciting Fashion Shows from East and Wall!

The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
presented The Celebrated Epstein Trio, at Leighton House, in aid of The Magic Wand Appeal.

A visit to Leighton House is a treat in itself and to hear the Epstein Trio playing in such gracious surroundings was an occasion to be relished!

The programme included works by Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky.

LEIGHTON HOUSE MUSEUM

Frederic Leighton (1830 to 1896) was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire.and was one of the most famous British artists of the nineteenth century. His father was a doctor and his grandfather had been the primary physician to the Russian Royal family in
St Petersburg. It seems therefore entirely appropriate that we should be raising money for medical research in this wonderful house.

Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killers of children and adults under forty, the second fasted growing cancers in people over sixty five and have the lowest survival rate of all cancers. We are specifically raising funds for a ground-breaking surgical tool called the Sonowand – a state-of-the-art neuro navigational system that converts pre-operative MRI scans into a virtual reconstruction of the brain, enabling surgeons to operate more accurately.

Ticket holders also had free entry to the house and were able to enjoy a private viewing of the Museum’s elegant rooms before the concert.

John Porter is raising funds through JustGiving with the “Movember” campaign

“After a long battle, my mother Hilary succumbed to a glioblastoma last month – a brain tumour. There is no cure for this grim disease and it affects a surprising number of people.  Research into brain tumours is under-funded and I want to do something to help change that. I’ve been joined in this cause by some brave work colleagues (Nick Gilfillan and Stefan Gurney).  Rather than demean ourselves by pursuing some sort of physical activity, we’ve decided to join in with Movember. If you don’t think this is enough of a sacrifice please look at our previous efforts. We’ll update this page with photos of the growth each week.”

Having recently lost one of their parishioners to a brain tumour, the Church of Holy Cross, Parsons Green, kindly supported BTRC’s Grassini Fellowship project at their Holy Cross Charity Ball held on 13th October, at the Hurlingham Club, Ranelagh Gardens, London, SW6 3PR.
